Advising First - Division of Undergraduate Studies

Responsibilities
  • Serves as a Pre-Law Academic Advisor for undergraduate students and discusses topics including but not limited to exploring the field of law, excelling in the first year, exploring majors, engaging in experiential learning. Supports students by reviewing documents (e.g., resumes, personal statements, and other writing samples), application timelines and school selection, and assisting with law school financial planning. Maintains detailed advising notes in university database and participates in pre-law outreach and programming initiatives as instructed by the Pre-Law Assistant Director. Completes all corresponding administrative tasks associated with the position.
  • Teaches multiple sections of pre-law courses, and develops and revises course syllabi, assignments, and course materials. Mentors and oversees undergraduate pre-law peer leaders, their programming development and execution, as well as any other tasks leaders complete related to the pre-law experience overall.
  • Reviews pre-law student engagement and outcomes data using available tools (e.g., Admissions, EAB, Pre-Law listserv, Nole Network, and LSAC Advisor Portal). Creates outreach campaigns in EAB to encourage timely participation with pre-law advising.
  • Presents pre-law campus networking presentations to students during orientation sessions and other campus events.
  • Provides ongoing education and updates on law school admission trends as well as stays up to date on policies and changes impacting students applying to law school. Attends regional or national conferences (e.g., PLANC or SAPLA) to stay current on industry best practices.

Qualifications

Master's degree and four years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in roles such as advising, coaching, or other student services.
  • Ability to extract complex academic information from various sources and maintain confidentiality.
  • Experience and/or working knowledge of student advising, counseling, or working one-on-one with people in a professional or academic setting.
  • Creative problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and ability to learn the Advising system.
  • Ability to interpret and explain policies, procedures, goals, and objectives to students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously with minimal to moderate supervision.
  • Ability to deal with people in a calm, confident manner and with complete objectivity.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, supervisors, and interdepartmental personnel.
  • Attention to detail with a high standard of integrity.

Anticipated Salary Range

Starting at $50,000, commensurate with education and experience.
